New Zealand’s chances of beating Australia in today’s Champions Trophy final took a serious blow before the game had even started when Daniel Vettori – their captian, star allrounder and figurehead – was ruled out through injury.
The New Zealanders came in as huge outsiders even before this unexpected news, but now the odds are stacked hugely in favour of Ricky Ponting’s men. They would be disappointed to lose to their cross-Tasman rivals at the best of times, and all the more so now that Vettori has joined Jacob Oram and Jesse Ryder on the sick list.
