As Ares I-X roared into the sky a few minutes ago, Lugo was watching the hard work of several hundred of his employees go with it. Glenn engineers designed and built the mockup upper stage, fully one-third of the towering rocket. That upper stage successfully separated from its solid rocket booster about 2 minutes into the flight, then plummeted to the ocean below.Kennedy Space Center, Fla. -- Ramon "Ray" Lugo, the deputy director of Cleveland's NASA Glenn Research Center, has seen a lot of rocket launches during his 36-year career with the space agency, but he still gets excited seeing the "smoke and fire.""How can I feel anything but really good?" Lugo said. "It makes us proud of the accomplishment. It was great. The folks in Cleveland ought to be very proud of the employees of the Glenn Research Center and the contributions they made. There's a lot that Cleveland should be proud of today.
