There's a lovely little story buried in the New York Times today about an Andy Warhol self-portrait that Sotheby's will auction on November 11th.
The piece belongs to Cathy Naso, who as a high school senior in 1965 found her way to the Factory hoping to write an essay for French class. She was fascinated with the place, and ended up becoming an unpaid receptionist there for the next 2 years.
Not only did that experience gice this "wide-eyed girl from Brooklyn" a bird's eye view of the 60's, Warhol gave her the self-portrait in lieu of paying her. She kept it in a closet for decades, fearing it would be stolen or damaged. It's now worth more than $1 million.
